The Award Boards: Alvarez, Miz and a Rookie Scramble
Our MVP, Cy Young and Rookie Scores — who leads each race, and by how much.
The season has a midpoint, and so does the awards conversation. Our 0-100 Scores sort out who's actually leading each race right now. Two of the four are close; two are not.
MVP watch
Our MVP Score (0–100) — each hitter’s OPS, on-base, power, run production and playing time graded against the league average, then blended. Higher is better.
Yordan Alvarez holds the AL lead at a Score of 83.9, hitting .310 with 29 homers and a 1.030 OPS, the best bat on a Houston lineup that leans on him. Ben Rice (79.0) is the pursuer, a Yankees first baseman who has already brought power to a spot that averaged a .723 OPS the last four years. The NL is tighter: James Wood edges ahead at 80.0, a step past Juan Soto (79.0), whose last month has been the hottest of anyone here at a 1.142 OPS.
